The aim of the scholarship programme is to train a new generation of translators of Romanian literature from a wide spectrum of foreign language backgrounds, as well as to establish closer links with professional translators who have already had their work published abroad. In order to achieve this, the selected candidates have the opportunity to spend a period of time in Romania in order to maintain direct contact with the Romanian literary and cultural milieu. 

Throughout their stay in Romania, participants will be lodged, free of charge, at the Brâncoveanu Palace Cultural Centre in Mogoşoaia (15 kilometres from Bucharest). On weekdays, free transport is provided between Mogoşoaia and Bucharest.


Programme structure:

• Introductory seminars on translation theory and practical translation workshops

• Seminars on contemporary Romanian literature held by teachers from the Romanian Literature Department of the University of Bucharest.

• Meetings (if possible) with masters students studying translation at the foreign language faculties of the University of Bucharest

• Access to lectures and tutorials at the University of Bucharest

• Access to the libraries of the University of Bucharest (participants will be provided with library permits)

• Translation workshop at the centre run by the Mircea Dinescu Poetry Foundation on the banks of the Danube

• Meetings and seminars with Romanian authors, literary critics and translators

• Contacts with publishers

• Trips to the theatre and museums

• Guided tours


Participants are expected to:

• Attend the programme’s workshops and seminars

• Participate in meetings with Romanian authors, translators and publishers

• Translate texts proposed during the seminars and / or texts chosen by the participant

• Write short texts describing their experiences during the programme. These texts will subsequently be published by the Romanian Cultural Institute.

• Be available to be interviewed by the media about their translation activities
