Romania at the International Book Fair BuchWien 2009

Between 12 -15 November 2009, the Romanian Cultural Institute organised the Romanian stand at the Vienna International Book Fair, an important cultural event that combines an international book fair and a sophisticated literary festival taking place in various locations in Vienna.

The theme of the Romanian stand was the 20th anniversary of the fall of communism. Among the 130 titles displayed were titles belonging to the Romanian publishing houses Academia Civică, All, Art, Cartea Românească, Curtea Veche, Humanitas Clasic, Ideea Europeană, Igloo Media, Paralela 45, Polirom, Vremea, IDEA, Nemira, Editura Institutului Cultural Român as well as a selection of the volumes published abroad with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute.

Upon the invitation of the Romanian Cultural Institute, writers Lucian Dan Teodorovici and Ion Vianu held two public readings. On Friday, 13 November 2009, Lucian Dan Teodorovici read an excerpt from his novel Our Circus Presents... (Polirom, 2007), translated into German by Georg Aescht, and on Saturday, 14 November, Ion Vianu read from his latest novel, Tsilla. The discussions were mediated by Austrian writer Jan Koneffke.

At the invitation of the organisers of Buch Wien 2009, the National Book Centre attended the series of debates entitled "On Translation" concerning the translation support policies. Corina Bernic presented the activity of the Romanian National Book Centre, its strategies of implementing the translation support programmes as well as the results obtained in its three years of acitvity.
