The National Book Centre at the International Book Fair Buchwien 2008

 
Between 19 – 23 November 2008 the National Book Centre (CENNAC) will attend the International Book Fair Wiener Buchmesse 2008 in Vienna. It is for the first time that CENNAC is present at an international book fair with a stand of its own, the rented space being of 9 square metres. The stand will display a selection of over 130 volumes, albums and magazines that have been published through our financing programmes Translation and Publication Support, 20 Romanian Authors and Publishing Romania, a selection of albums edited by the publishing house of the Romanian Cultural Institute, as well as various promotional materials.

Together with the Romanian Cultural Institute in Vienna, the National Book Centre has organised and is supporting the presence of four Romanian authors at the Reading Festival Lesefesqoche to take place during the same period as the book fair. 

On 19 November 2008, in Literaturzentrale, Ioan Groşan shall read an excerpt from his novel O sută de zile la Porţile Orientului, whereas Radu Aldulescu will read an excerpt from his latest novel Istoria eroilor unui ţinut de verdeaţă şi răcoare.

From 14:30 on 20 November, on the stage dedicated to fiction (Belletristikbühne), Adrian Chivu will read an excerpt from Caiet de desen, whereas Ion Manolescu will read an excerpt Derapaj. The German translations will be read by Austrian actors.

The two series of readings will be mediated by the celebrated German writer and journalist (co-editor of Wespennest magazine) Jan Koneffke, lauterate of numerous prizes such as the Leonce un Lena Prize for Literature (1987), the Friedrich Hölderlin  Award (1990), former holder of the Villa Massimo stipend in Rome (1995). One of his novels, A Love on the Tiber, was translated into Romanian by Nora Iuga and published in 2007 by the Romanian publishing house Humanitas. His latest novel, Eine nie vergessene Geschichte (A Story Never Forgotten) published by the German publishing house DuMont in 2008 was highly acclaimed by the critics and launched at the Frankfurt International Book Fair. 

The National Book Centre will also attend the series of public debates on the status of translation and its financing policies in Europe at a national and local level entitled “On Translation” to take place on 21 November. The Director of the National Book Centre, Mrs. Catrinel Pleşu, will present the results obtained during the two years since these programmes have started operating in Romania, as well as the difficulties that the Romanian Cultural Institute has faced while implementing them. The conferences will be attended by representatives of international institutions such as S. Fischer Stiftung, the European Committee, Austria’s Foreign Ministry, Literature Across Frontiers (Great Britain), NextPage (Bulgaria), Federation of European Publishers etc.
